YOU'RE IN GOOD HANDS

Taking care of your furniture before you move house

Moving can be very stressful. The only people who are excited about moving are the removalists as they get paid or make money from it.

When moving house, don’t just rely on removalists to take care of your furniture. Get prepared for your move and take of your furniture before handing it to the removalists.

If you leave it all to removalist, you will need to be prepared to pay more and also possibly see damages to some of your furniture, which you might not necessarily notice until the job is finished.

Key inclusions

  • Start preparing your move early
  • Protect your items well
  • Disassemble your items if you can
  • Talk to your removalist company about delicate items

Start early

Start preparing your move by contacting your furniture moving company at least 2 weeks and preferably 4 weeks before you move. If you have a 4 or 5 bedroom house you might want to do that even 6 weeks before you move so that you have plenty of time to start packing.

Protect your items well

Protecting your furniture is 80% packing and 20% paying attention. Pack all small items into boxes and large furniture that you want to move should be protected by either bubble wrap or blankets to minimise the chances for scratches or more serious damage.

If you have very delicate items, you may want to speak to your moving company and ask them tips on the best way to protect your furniture.

Client disassembling a table before the arrival of the removalists

Damages to furniture doesn’t happen just because the removalist is negligent or unprofessional, it might happen for various reasons, some of them not really related to the moving company, such as when there is a road accident or if the truck bumps into something that could not be avoided. There are a lot of things that happen on the road and while most removalist will go out of their way to protect customer’s stuff, they are not always to prevent this . When furniture is packed well such as when covered by blankets or bubble wrap, the chances of damages are significantly reduced.

Disassemble your items if you can

Many people don’t like assembling or disassembling furniture. However, If you are able to disassemble your furniture you can save time and money. If you chose to pull your furniture apart, you might want to do it very early before moving, but it is not always possible where you don’t want to have to do without the furniture for several days. Assembling and disassembling furniture can take a lot of time (and cost you more). If you disassemble before the removalists arrive, you will make their job easy, save time and make it easy for the items to be better protected before they are loaded onto the truck. Plus items that have been pulled apart don’t take as much space in the truck and if you have a lot items and you are on a budget and the removalist truck is small, you don’t want to have to do two turns as that will increase the cost .

Talk to your moving company

If you have larger than normal items or very delicate furniture, you might want to talk to the moving company and ask them the best way to protect such itms. Often they will be able to give you the best tips because of the experience they have. Don’t just rely on your own untrained observation. You might also want to watch videos online and you will be able to see how professionals have packed any delicate items such as yours. You just need to go on You tube and google your query and there will surely be a video for that.
